Carpenter Township is located in the far northeast corner of Itasca County in north-central Minnesota. Carpenter township was formed in 1903. This is the largest township in Itasca County with three conventional 6 mile by 6 mile township blocks together under one organization. The 18 mile long township has two postal ZIP codes, 55723 (Cook) in the east and 56639 (Effie) in the west. The east area formerly had a local post office with the name Togo which continues to be preferred by many in the local area. The large area of approximately 108 square miles within the township boundaries is sparsely populated; the 2020 census was 154.

Deer Lake
Watershed Association
The Deer Lake Watershed Association, an independent 317A nonprofit organization, monitors the health of the lakes and streams in approximately the western half of Carpenter Township. The association also conducts various activities to improve the water quality of the lakes and streams and to improve wildlife habitat. The Deer Lake watershed drains north as a part of the Hudson Bay watershed.

Deer Lake has 20.7 miles of shoreline (25.6 if islands are counted). The lake has no inlets and only one outlet into the Deer River. Its water comes from rainfall and many surface and underground springs. Deer Lake is considered "ooligotrophic" indicating very clear water with low nutrient levels.
